The first Raffles Ecological Literacy children storybook was published in 2010, and the storybook project has since developed into one of the strengths of the programme. The initial concept of the books was to fill the gap of the lack of children storybooks that are based on Singapore’s local wildlife and nature. The storybooks have since achieved more than that by being companion books for children on visits to local nature hotspots, and have even been incorporated by some schools into their curriculum. In addition, the concept was adopted by some primary schools and they began producing their own books.
A full student production from start to end, all of our children storybooks have been written by the students of the Raffles Ecological Literacy Programme, and were beautifully illustrated by their fellow schoolmates from the Raffles Art Institute. The students have a shared vision of spreading the awareness of our rich natural heritage through picture storybooks to the younger generation – in the hope that they will do their part to conserve our environment and biodiversity.
